Post-Traumatic Meniere's Syndrome

Read our Disclaimer.

Post-traumatic Meniere's Disease is a disorder of the inner ear and is typified by periodic episodes of vertigo (dizziness) tinnitus (noise in the ear), fullness in the ear or hearing changes. Meniere's Disease/Syndrome is thought to be caused by bleeding into the inner ear or disturbance of fluid in the ear.

Symptoms following an injury to the head or neck can occur immediately following injury or may occur as long as one year later, according to researchers. The likelihood of a Meniere's diagnosis being related to a particular injury is frequently a function of the severity of the injury (the more severe the injury the more likely); the time of symptom onset (the longer the delay the less likely a connection); and the presence of pre-existing conditions.

Meniere's disease is often managed through a combination of lifestyle changes, symptom management and medication, although surgery is sometimes required. Lifestyle changes include the avoidance of loud noises and stress, measures to reduce or minimize falls, reduction in salt; quitting smoking and others. Symptom management most often consists of lying in a quiet, darkened room with your eyes closed.
