Safety Tips for Pedestrians from Your Erie Accident Lawyers
It’s summer time and we all want to get outside and walking provides a great way to do that and get some exercise. However, each summer there are many accidents involving pedestrians whether it be on the road on a sidewalk or in a bike path. In order to minimize these, Your Erie Accident Lawyers have put together a list of tips in order to help keep you safe while you enjoy the summer weather.
Walk on a sidewalk or path. Although this is not always possible, if you are able to stay on a sidewalk or path your chances of being hit are far lower. If you must walk on the road, stay as far to the left as possible, walking against the flow of traffic.
Only walk during the day. Although there are reflectors and such that you can use to stay visible at night, these are no replacement for old fashioned daylight.
Walk between your child and the road. This way you will be able to prevent them from running into the road.
Be mindful of cars that are backing up or pulling out of a driveway or intersection. These drivers are often thinking more about other vehicles than pedestrians.
Be predictable. Walk where you would expect people to be walking and use crosswalks. This makes it easier for cars to plan where you will be.
Look both ways before crossing the street. It sounds old and cliche but being mindful is really the best defense when walking somewhere.
Don’t be in a rush. Leave with plenty of time to get to your destination so that you can take time when crossing the street. Running out into an intersection is very risky even if you are in a crosswalk.
